Initial Thoughts:

As is the case with me I follow actors I like, while I had heard of him before I’ll admit to only truly seeing how great an actor Peter Dinklage is after Game of Thrones (season 4 premiere was excellent BTW). So he’s in this and I decided to watch it.

Main Points:

This is very slowly paced movie, a lot of time is taken up with people asking Finbar (Dinklage) questions and his very short answers. He is a very shy, isolated person that slowly lets people in during the film.

Dinklage does a great job of portraying a very odd, yet highly intelligent and interesting character. The movie at first just deals with boredom and loneliness but eventually moves on to other issues (such as predigest people), the failure of a marriage and dealing with loss.

Of course I have to point out that the town he goes to is Newfoundland, NJ and I live in Newfoundland, Canada. This only matters because here we say it as all one word, whereas American’s often say “new-FOUND-land”. I imagine we say it right, we’re been here over 500 years after all (I’m having a little fun here).

There are some funny and touching moments here and it certainly gives insight into what it’s like in a very small town (any news travels very fast and you have to make your own fun a lot). The characters are all fully fleshed-out and all interesting/likable in their own ways.

Final Thoughts:

Patricia Clarkson is also very good here and of course Dinklage is always excellent. I found the movie rather slow at times and for the most part very little happens. There is a little surprise near the end but ultimately life just continues on. I give this 7/10 and a mild recommendation, there is some adult situations and for the most part I would only say watch this if you’re a big Peter Dinklage fan.
