Initial Thoughts:

I never got a chance to see this in theater. My wife saw it and enjoyed it, so when it came on FiberOP a few nights ago I decided to watch it.

Main Points:

It’s nice to see movie stars who have no problem poking fun at themselves. This movie is all about that, in particular I like seeing Michael Cera (who pretty much always plays the nice guy) be a total drug-abusing, sex-crazed, total asshole. Seth Rogen is another guy who generally just plays himself (aside from a few notable exceptions) and he also does that here and admits to it.

What you need to think about when you see this movie is that there is almost nothing original here, it’s all about making fun of and paying homage to other movies, that doesn’t mean it’s not funny. There were plenty of parts that made me laugh (Emma Watson has a great cameo where she goes berserk and robs six guys). James Franco shows once again he can do comedy and if you’re a fan of his movies there are plenty of references to others.

The movie does have a positive message (mostly) and ultimately does put forward a belief in God, the devil and the afterlife. I guess a little…

was needed. One of the parts I really liked was when Danny McBride is later shown to be the leader of a bunch of cannibals, with Channing Tatum as his gimp! I don’t know McBride in real life but he always plays a jerk in movies/TV, it was nice to just take that to the extreme here and show that in his own twisted and deprived way he was actually thriving.

Final Thoughts:

This is not an Oscar calibre movie, it’s fun and has some good special effects and is a laugh. All the actors turn in good performances and are obviously having a great time. There are some gross moments that I could have done without (like them drinking their own piss) and some stupid dick/cum jokes. This movie is certainly not for kids but I would recommend it for fans of the actors or for some light popcorn fun. 7/10 from me, hopefully soon I’ll get to see another Oscar nominated movie (or just something newer). Until next time, have a great morning/afternoon/evening all.
