A pair of underachieving cops are sent back to a local high school to blend in and bring down a synthetic drug ring.

Initial Thoughts:

I never saw the original show with Johnny Depp but I am a fan of Jonah Hill and a friend told me some parts were really funny, so we decided to go.Open-mouthed smile

Main Points:

At first we see Schmidt (played by Jonah Hill) as a very nerdy high school student (and trying his best to look like Eminem) get rejected cruelly while trying to ask a woman to the senior prom. He then enters police training school, finds someone he was in high school with (and who was a bully at the time) and they become friends.

After this the plot is fairly simple, these same two crappy cops (who managed to graduate) mess up their first bust (forgetting to read the Miranda Rights to the drug dealer they catch) and are given a change of assignment, they are to go undercover in a high school to bust up a drug ring, stop the drug from spreading to other schools and of course not get expelled and ruin their cover.

What follows is a fairly typical comedy with some unusual/gross/surprising jokes that did make me laugh. For starters I appreciated how the police captain who assigns them to the new post goes out of his way to say that an old program is being resurrected because no one on the “force” can come with any original ideas anymore Winking smile. Once you accept that this movie is very tongue in cheek it does make it more fun.

There are some interesting jokes as differences are shown between high school kids in 2005 and now (though I can’t see that small amount of time making much difference). Schmidt and his partner Jenko (played by Channing Tatum) make connections with the school’s drug dealer and things seem to be on the right track.

Problem’s arise as Schmidt starts to believe he is really back in high school and this time he is ecstatic to be one of the popular guys. He has a crush on a student and when he asks her to prom, she says yes but of course things go wrong.

SPOILER ALERT!

As usual I’m not going through the whole plot. The two of them decide to have a huge party (serving alcohol to minors of course) and they get caught. Not only that but there new Captain (who works out of an old church at 21 Jump street naturally) discovers the drug has made it to another school. They get thrown off the unit (and expelled from school) but of course decide to go to the prom and catch the supplier anyway.

Johnny Depp gets to put in a nice cameo just before his character is killed and there is an excellent (and very funny) car chase. In the end the supplier was the high school gym teacher and Schmidt literally shots his dick off (a rather gross part of the movie).Vampire bat

Final Thoughts:

If you don’t mind some crude humour and offbeat jokes this movie delivers most of the time. At least this movie didn’t take itself seriously and I did mostly enjoy it. 7/10 from me and for a cheap night I’d recommend it.Thumbs up
