Sherlock Holmes and his sidekick Dr. Watson join forces to outwit and bring down their fiercest adversary, Professor Moriarty.

Initial Thoughts:

I enjoyed the first Sherlock Holmes movie and I have always liked Robert Downey Jr. He’s a great example of someone who had personal problems, sorted them out and got back on top of his game. Other actors (who I’m sure you can think of) have not do so well but I digress. I was looking forward to this and an early review said it was better than the first, unfortunately I have to disagree.

Main Points:

Everything is bigger in this movie in terms of consequences, action and the stakes. Holmes continues to act in strange ways (the jungle in his house was amusing) and somehow manages to draw Watson (played again by Jude Law of course) into his plans. Open-mouthed smile

This time Holmes believe that Moriarty is orchestrating attacks all over the world so that he can start World War I early (the movie is set in 1891) and make a ton of money selling arms to each side.

There are some humorous scenes with Holmes and Watson that I enjoyed. Moriarty is genuinely creepy and the scenes with Holmes were excellent. Smile

My big problem with the movie is that aside from the beginning and the end Holmes does almost no investigating in this movie. It’s almost a straight action movie and this is a let down as compared with the first one. In the first movie there was mystery and wonder, this one mostly you just end up waiting for the next explosion or the next slow-motion action scene.

SPOILER ALERT!

Holmes appears to die at the end but of course he’s not dead. The studio wants to pump out some more sequels no doubt and didn’t have the guts to kill him.

Final Thoughts:

The action scenes were well done, Downey and Law are entertaining to watch but it just wasn’t enough. The movie even drags in a few parts and was bored a few times. If you really loved the first movie, go see this one. Otherwise I’d pick from some of the other December offerings. 6/10 from me.Vampire bat
