A malfunctioning time machine at a ski resort takes a man back to 1986 with his two friends and nephew, where they must relive a fateful night and not change anything to make sure the nephew is born.

Initial Thoughts:

I will see any movie that John Cusack is in. I find he is a very good actor who is under-appreciated and often the best part of a lot of the movies he’s in.

Second of all I am a sucker for 80’s and 90’s music. So I knew I would enjoy any movie set in 1986. I’m the kind of guy that almost stopped liking music that came out past 2000 but enough about me Smile.

Main Points:

For a comedy things start out depressing. All the main characters are unhappy whether it is because of their job, a cheating wife, terrible girl and one friend is just plain suicidal

Adam and Nick, (played by Cusack and Craig Robinson respectively) decide to take suicidal Lou (played by Rob Corddry) and strangely Adam’s nephew Jacob to a ski resort where they used to go in the 80’s. The place is falling apart and the town is almost deserted but with booze and a time machine they manage to have a good time anyway.

This is when the movie gets bizarre but in a good way and the fun starts Open-mouthed smile . The hot tub takes them back to ‘86 and they all have a chance to change (or not change) many things that happened on this eventful night.

Chevy Chase also has a small role in this movie as the repairman. He is ok but I just don’t find him as funny as he used to be.

What I really liked about this movie is the characters do things in the past that make sense. Despite the pleadings from Jacob that they can’t change anything in the past they do, to make their lives better. Why wouldn’t you want to fix mistakes and wrong choices you made? Like most people I have regrets and there are several days in my life I’d love to do over to make my life better.

They also do fun stuff like sing songs that haven’t been written yet and make bets on stuff they know will happen. One character does the old “Back to the Future” thing (well a slight twist on it) where he stays in the past to use his future knowledge to become rich. Hell I’d do the same thing, how could you resist?

Final Thoughts:

The ending to this is good and their are some really funny parts. Cusack is excellent as always. In the end they all end up with better lives and Lou is super rich as he invented things like “Lougle” and was in “Motely Lou” (lol! I’m laughing at that stuff now Laughing out loud).

It’s a fun, simple movie with a few gross out parts (like a guy getting his arm tore off, which oddly enough is not a surprise). A clever idea and a good cast. It made me think about the past and friendship. If you like Cusack and don’t mind some adult humour I recommend this. 7/10 from me Vampire bat.
